Madeira Island honored by the 5th time as Europe's "best island destination"

Madeira has been honored as Europe's 'best island destination', 2018, at the tourism "Oscars" gala at the Zappeion Megaron Hall in Athens, Greece.
This initiative was created in 1993 with the aim of recognizing the best examples of good practices in the tourism sector. In this 25th edition of the World Travel Awards, Madeira was the winner among the competitors: Azores, Baleares, Canary Islands, Cyprus, Crete, Guernsey, Jersey, Malta, Sardinia and Sicily.

The following aspects have contributed greatly to the tourism of the island and, as a result of this, the region has been constantly chosen, named and, of course, distinguished:
Location: the island is equidistant from Europe and North Africa
Travelling: 90 minutes flight to mainland Europe and about 4 hours flight to Central Europe
Technology and Communication: fiber optic connections with the rest of the world
Hour: Same time zone as London
EU: Member of the European Union and the Euro zone
Schengen area: Free movement of people, capital, labor, information and technology
Security: one of the safest regions in the world
Inhabitants: 254 thousand and 1 million in the Diaspora
Tourists: 1.8 Million

This is the 5th time that Madeira is chosen as 'best island destination'. This portuguese region had already won in 2017, 2016, 2014 and 2013. A feat crowned with the achievement of the world title three times consecutively: 2017, 2016 and 2015.
The nominees are selected by the general public and by more than 200 thousand tourism professionals from 160 countries.
The awards represent one of the most important distinctions that various representatives in the tourism sector can receive, and the brand is globally recognized as a quality seal.

It should be noted that the Regional Government has also created a privileged set of conditions to attract foreign investment, this includes the MIBC (Madeira's International Business Center).

Madeira will now host the European Gala of the World Travel Awards in 2019.
